Dwight Summer Camp 2026 – Summer Camp Counselor

At Dwight, our beautiful facilities—including a six-lane pool, visual and performing arts studios, pickleball courts, gyms, design and science labs, and proximity to Central Park—provide the perfect backdrop. We’re seeking enthusiastic, dedicated, and caring Summer Camp Counselors to join us in creating a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment. If you love working with children, have a passion for learning and play, and enjoy teamwork, this could be the perfect summer role for you.

 

Dates & Schedule:

  • Camp Duration: Monday–Friday, June 15 – August 7, 2026 (Closed Friday, June 19, for Juneteenth & Friday, July 3, for Independence Day)
 

Compensation & Benefits:

  • $17–$22/hour, commensurate with experience
  • Lunch provided
  • $150 bonus for completing required camp orientations & training
  • Staff perk: children of staff working 7–8 weeks may attend camp for $50/week per child
 

What You’ll Do:

Camper Supervision & Safety:

  • Supervise 15–25 campers aged 4–12, ensuring their physical and emotional safety during daily activities, swimming sessions, and NYC field trips.
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment.
  • Guide campers through transitions, reinforce behavior expectations, and respond to conflicts or emergencies.
 

Activity Leadership & Thematic Programming:

  • Plan and lead 1–2 hours of daily scheduled activities, from sports and crafts to team-building exercises.
  • Support weekly themed events of 250 campers, guest performances, and camp-wide celebrations.
  • Adapt activities to different ages and skill levels, fostering creativity and teamwork.
 

Aquatic Program Participation:

  • Assist in the pool 3–4 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
  • Model safe swimming practices and support younger campers with changing and pool routines.
 

Engagement in Specialist Subjects:

  • Actively participate in Art, Design, Science, and Sports sessions as a role model.
  • Inspire campers to explore new interests while maintaining enthusiasm and professionalism.
 

Role Modeling & Mentorship:

  • Lead by example, demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and enthusiasm.
  • Support campers’ personal, social, and emotional growth.
  • Model community values during meals and throughout the day.
 

Team Collaboration & Communication:

  • Work closely with approximately 60 staff members to ensure smooth operations.
  • Communicate professionally with campers, families, and staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and team discussions.
 

Leadership & Mentoring of Junior Staff:

  • Guide Counselors-in-Training (ages 17–18) and supervise younger volunteers (ages 14–16).
  • Provide feedback, support, and training to help junior staff succeed.
 

Administrative & Logistical Support:

  • Assist with attendance, check-in/out, field trips, and activity prep.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe activity spaces.
 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching, childcare, or classroom experience
  • Prior summer camp experience
  • Undergraduate studies related to childcare/education
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification
 

Required Training (provided by Dwight):

  • Online Sexual Harassment & Mandated Reporter training
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification (if required)
  • Virtual Summer Camp Staff Training
  • Two in-person staff site trainings (late May–early June)
  • Mandatory Swim Test
  • First Day Orientation: Monday, June 15, 7:15–8:30 AM
 

Additional Paid Opportunities:

  • Extended day supervision (7:15–8:30 AM)
  • Late Stay supervision (4:30–6:00 PM)
  • Bus chaperoning, social media/photography, and Counselor-in-Training supervision
